Excellent recipe! I was scared to try, but I so wanted to do a German chocolate cake for my husbands birthday. It is delicious and plenty thick enough. When it cools it will be perfect.

In reply to Peggie. It's enough to frost a 9-inch two layer cake like the pictures you see in the post. If you want more frosting to cover the sides, then I would double the recipe.

In reply to Irma Jean Priemer. It sounds like it may have been cooked too long. It will thicken as it cools, but it shouldn't be hard.

My frosting was perfect when it was warm, but hardened a little as it cooled. Why would that be?

I have to update my previous comment. I used your recipe to make this cake for the Veterans Dinner at church last night. I was afraid the frosting was too dry, however, when I got to church this morning they raved about how good that cake was. One man said it was the best German chocolate cake he’d ever had. So, I guess it wasn’t too dry after all and I just had to make a corrected review.

I really liked it i cooked it for about 17/18 minutes and it turned out pretty good! It was a little gritty but it will work, we used a chocolate cake mix, I would love to make it again! I love German chocolate cake And i made it for my 11th birthday! Charlotte

I was looking for a frosting for a chocolate cake that did not require powdered sugar…this was the answer. It was fairly easy to make although I didn’t get the light brown color even turning up the heat some. It’s somewhat lighter in color but just as delicious!
